The Lifecycle of Japanese Knotweed
Identified by its’ red buds emerging into new shoots. These shoots grow rapidly by as much as 10cm per day.
Shoots can reach 2-3m tall. Stalks look like bamboo with red and purple speckles on the leaves. Produces white flowers near the end of the season.
The flowers last until late Autumn until they drop. The leaves start to yellow, then turn brown and eventually fall off. Leaving hollow brown stems.
Hard to identify. Dead Stems above ground. Extensive and alive rhizome network under ground.
Japanese Knotweed Legal Obligations
ASBOs require you to stop the spread of Japanese knotweed. Failure to do so will result in the following:
- For individuals, a fixed penalty notice of £100 or prosecution will be the first step.
- If convicted, a level 4 fine of £2,500 will be imposed.
- For organisations, the fine can be as much as £20,000.
